a monarch butterfly1 soars into the jacaranda tree
i tell myself it’s not a sign, it’s their season
then there are two, fluttering in & out of each other
hummingbirds2 circle me like I’m covered
in pollen the sidewalk is more like a ramp
because of tree roots that refused to be paved
over3 hibiscus reaching through the fence
unable to be contained4 this matcha, the same
forest as the buttons on your shirt, soft piano
from my headphones, a song I haven’t skipped5
another hummingbird6 climbs the tree in search
of a certain nectar, doesn’t find it, leaves.
jacaranda blossoms coat the sidewalk, a purple
masterpiece7 & why can’t they just be fucking flowers
